Prof. Dr. Patrick Ruch is Professor and head of the Bibliomics and Text Mining group of the Department of Information sciences at the University of Applied Sciences Geneva. He also serves as chair of the European Federation of Medical Informatics’ Working Group on Text Mining. Patrick Ruch graduated in both computer science (INSTN, Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique, Saclay, France) and philosophy (Sorbonne University, Paris). He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Geneva in 2002. He then occupied various corporate and public research positions in Europe (IBM Zürich Research Lab.; EPFL Lausanne) and in the US (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). From 1998 to 2008, he worked at University Hospitals of Geneva in the Radiology and Medical Informatics department. In 2008, he became a Professor of Information and Library Sciences at the Geneva School of Business Administration. He is author of more than fifty original scientific publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals in information sciences, bioinformatics, computer science and health sciences. His current research focuses on developing methods to exploit highly structured semantically-rich data types (Wikipedia/DBPedia, molecular biology databases, ontologies, SPARQL endpoints...) and unstructured content (texts, sequences, patents, clinical narratives...). His team develops expertise and infrastructure services to search and mine various unstructured and semi-structured data repositories for both public libraries (MEDLINE, patents libraries, the WWW) and private companies (Electronic Medical Records, corporate collections).
